Find out what happened in the Ski and Snowboard World Ski Champions 2015.
The FIS Freestyle Ski and Snowboard World Championships is taking place in Kreischberg, Austria from 15-25th January. This is the first time the Freestyle Ski World Championships and the Freestyle Snowboard World Championships have been merged. The girls hit it hard, but the weather was playing against them with temperatures not quite getting down to zero and rain falling during the Snowboard Halfpipe competition.
In the Halfpipe the top spot went to Cai Xuetong from China with a score of 94.25, second went to Spaniard Queralt Castelle, who scored 81.25. Clemence Grimal of France came in third, losing her second place spot by 1 point in the final run. Australian and Olympic medalist Torah Bright finished a disappointing 6th, she went big but bum touched on the transition on two of her runs.
Just before the start of the event, the world of female snowboarding was hit by the unexpected news of Halfpipe Olympic Gold Medalist Kaitlyn Farrington’s (USA) retirement from competitive snowboarding
“I thought I was too young to hear the word ‘retirement,’” she told ESPN. “There’s so much I still want to do in the halfpipe. I thought I’d be pushing the sport for many more years and try to make the Olympic team in 2018. But the risk of snowboarding in a halfpipe or hitting jumps is too high. It’s been tough to accept, but I’m retiring from competitive snowboarding.”
The 25-year-old is leaving the sport behind due to Congenital cervical stenosis, a narrowing of the spine in her neck – which occurred after a bad fall.
In the Aerials Australia Laura Peel took the number one spot, followed by Kiley McKinnon (USA) and Xu Mengtao (CHN). While not producing the most difficult jumps of the competition Peel was rewarded for her steadiness, managing only the second highest profile victory of her career.
In the snowboard X Lindsey Jacobellis (USA) came in first followed by Nelly Moenne-Loccoz of france and Michela Moioli of Italy.
The Freestyle Dki and Snowboard Slopestyle finals will be held on Wednesday. BBC Sport are covering and you can watch all the action here.
